Attention now has turned to the under hood area as is looking decidedly tatty and in dire need of a spruce up. What will be a regular occurrence, the fenders will have to come off. There some more surprises in that there was no rust in the battery tray area.

Here is my 1962 Ford Galaxie 500 Club Victoria Q Code. It is currently one of 2 in the 1962 Galaxie Registry. The car's paint has suffered the ravages of time, it is badly affected by 30 years in of storage in Texas, then 14 years under a carport in the Fontana area of California. The bumpers badly need to be rechromed and despite the interior looking OK, it to has been badly heat affected and the seat coverings are very brittle. The stainless on the body is in great shape and will only require some buffing up.

The interior handles and castings is pretty badly pitted, some of it may be able to be rescued, however the search is on for replacements, either NOS or reproductions will suffice.

She was built in Los Angeles December 20 1961 , her color is Oxford Blue, the interior is called Blue Crush. The power plant was the optional Q Code, HiPo 390 cubic inches, solid lifter cam and rated at 375HP, with the dealer installed 3x2v Holleys, Ford called this option "The Six Shooter" bumped up the ponies to 401HP.

The spare looks like it is the original and never been on the car

My particular car did have the 406/427 long style cast iron headers. They were not an option until the 406 arrived on the scene, I have not been able to establish when they were originally installed. The previous owner decided to save some weight off the front end (the headers way 45lbs each!) MrWreckingball's 1962 Ford Galaxie and replaced them Hooker tube style headers. The transmission a Warner T10 Close Ratio 4 speed, which proved to be quite adequate behind small block engines, however, Ford drag racers soon learned soon after its introduction when installed behind the big block FEs, that is was woefully weak and numerous transmission failures ended many potentially winning runs.

The transmission in my car was prone to jumping out of gear, a flaw in the case hardening of the mainshaft, lead to the catestrophic failure of the second gear and sundry parts. It has since been rebuilt and is performing flawlessly.MrWreckingball's 1962 Ford Galaxie

A vintage Ansen scattershield is installed in the car which alludes that this car was somewhat unique, the car was delivered to its original owner with out sunvisors! It does have a radio and heater, power steering and power brakes were not fitted. 3.89 : 1 gears were factory installed in the 9" rear end.

The car is a survivor has as spent the best part of the last 40 years in storage, all be it very poorly. Despite the interior pics showing that it is almost like new, it has been affected by the heat and the seat trim is brittle and cracks when someone sits on the seats .

The car has only travelled 9674 miles MrWreckingball's 1962 Ford Galaxie since it was built and the condition of the underside of the car testifies that this is true, there is not mark, rust spot, grease or road grime to be seen.seen MrWreckingball's 1962 Ford Galaxie MrWreckingball's 1962 Ford GalaxieMrWreckingballs 1962 Ford Galaxie MrWreckingballs 1962 Ford Galaxie

What makes a HiPo Galaxie special?

MrWreckingballs 1962 Ford Galaxie All B,G,M & Q Code cars came with larger brakes

MrWreckingballs 1962 Ford Galaxie The Rear springs were heavy duty either 5 or 6 leaf configuration.

MrWreckingballs 1962 Ford Galaxie The front brake pipes on all Hi-PO cars went up to the front crossmember below the radiator.

MrWreckingballs 1962 Ford Galaxie The 3/8 inch fuel lines from the fuel tank

are also a larger diameter than the 5/16 inch on regular full size Fords.

There is also another unique feature about the car, it has a vintage blow shield that is made of 1/4 steel plate that follows the profile of the transmission hump. It is attached to the body mount brackets that are part of the front frame rails. Combined with vintage Ansen steel scattershield and 45 pound each headers drove the weight right up.

Its amazing that Dick Brannan was able to run an all steel car like mine in 1962 (albeit with a 406) and reeling of 12.9s @118mph and seriously embarrasing the factory lightweights!

Now the restoration begins (Saturday 26th Sept 2009) with the careful removal of the stainless trim

The bumpers are currently being replated, the exterior stainless trim is being polished in my workshop, the interior will be completely replaced and am currently waiting for shipment to leave the states within the next week or so.

Here is a little vid of it starting up and running

New paint should be applied in the next couple of weeks and then the reassembly will commence and hopefully will be cruising during the southern hemisphere summer.

Mr Fedex delivered a bunch of boxes from the good folks at Dearborn Classics, some of the items were, new seat covers in the original Blue Crush, new carpet, new floor mats, window rubber kit, door seal kit, body rubbers, glove box liner, parcel shelf, headliner, interior window and door handles, trunk and spare tire mat, shifter boot and retaining ring etc.

MrWreckingballs 1962 Ford Galaxie

A full interior and exterior fastener kit will be used to replace the rusted and pitted fasteners and will go a long to dressing up the interior and exterior.

The bumpers were picked up from Prahran Platers, John and his team have done a great job

MrWreckingballs 1962 Ford Galaxie MrWreckingballs 1962 Ford Galaxie

Today I managed to score some vintage 14x7 and 15x8.5 Torq Thrusts, a little bit of TLC and they should come up looking real sweet

MrWreckingballs 1962 Ford Galaxie MrWreckingballs 1962 Ford Galaxie

The tire sizes that the car will run are 225-60 x14s on the front, 275-60 x15s will bring up the rear. There is still a ways to go before all the old paint has been removed, we are getting closer. All the parts are ready and nothing else to chase down. Looking for to having it in paint so the rebuild can begin!

Here are some update pics of where its at with paint stripping, it's nearly done and will have it in primer shortly.

Sourced a very good Horn ring which will be a big improvement on the badly pitted original.

MrWreckingballs 1962 Ford Galaxie MrWreckingballs 1962 Ford Galaxie

Here is a small update:

The front fenders were removed so that the last of the side moldings could be removed.

MrWreckingballs 1962 Ford Galaxie MrWreckingballs 1962 Ford Galaxie

It revealed that there was no sign of rust in the expected places like at the base of the fenders and the firewall.

MrWreckingballs 1962 Ford Galaxie MrWreckingballs 1962 Ford Galaxie

MrWreckingballs 1962 Ford Galaxie

The condition of the body was so good, that it could have been clear-coated.

MrWreckingballs 1962 Ford Galaxie MrWreckingballs 1962 Ford Galaxie

The bare metal was rubbed down with wire wool and treat with wax and grease remover. 2pak etcher primer filler was sprayed on along with a guide coat.

MrWreckingballs 1962 Ford Galaxie MrWreckingballs 1962 Ford Galaxie

It will be rubbed down shortly and ready for the original spec Oxford Blue Metallic and a few coats of clear.

MrWreckingballs 1962 Ford Galaxie MrWreckingballs 1962 Ford Galaxie

Wet rubbing has commenced and has mostly been completed, there are a few areas that rubbed through that will need another shot of etch primer filler.

MrWreckingballs 1962 Ford Galaxie MrWreckingballs 1962 Ford Galaxie

One area that will need special care is the hood as it has been etched when the paint cracked. It will be treated, etch primer filler will be re-applied with a color guide coat. The hood and trunk lid will be removed and sanded down on the underside.

Its been a little while since the last update, there has been progress made and its starting to get exciting.

The car was wet rubbed with 400#Grit then wet rubbed again with 800#Grit

MrWreckingballs 1962 Ford Galaxie MrWreckingballs 1962 Ford Galaxie

The result was a shine on the body work as you can see by the shot of the roof

The front windscreen and the rear back glass were removed (which was a 4 plus hour marathon which was successful in zero breakage.MrWreckingballs 1962 Ford Galaxie

The hood, trunk and doors were removed for prepping for primer, the old rubbers were removed and all residue of grease and adhesive cleaned away

2pk Etch primer filler was applied and after it dried it was time to rub it downaround the doors, under the trunk lid and the hood. Finally the color was applied to these areas.

MrWreckingballs 1962 Ford Galaxie MrWreckingballs 1962 Ford Galaxie

The finish is straight off the gun, 5 coats of color and 2 coats of clear is the result that you see.

MrWreckingballs 1962 Ford Galaxie MrWreckingballs 1962 Ford Galaxie

As you can see the results so far has been very good and I owe it to my older brother whose exceptional talent has shone through despite total blindness in one eye and only 30% vision in the other!

We are very much looking forward rehanging the panels for final paint for the rest of the car. I have got to thank my 2 brothers and our understanding wives whose support has been fantastic.

Another weekend has come and gone and have made further progress, the door jambs, the bulkhead, trunk opening and area around the front fenders were given the body color treatment. However there was the usual labor intensive prep work had been done, the rubbing down, blowing the dust away and going over the areas with wax and grease remover

The car is finally in color and it has turned out fantastic on initial inspection, in the cold light of day the story was a little different.

It's been awhile since the last post, there has been a great deal of acitivity around the paint process and some issues that had cropped up. The primer we used reacted when the color coats were applied and it gave an uneven appearance in some areas. The paint guy had given us some bad advice. It has set us back a couple of weeks. The paint issue has now been resolved and will need a bit rework.

In the meantime, work continued on the dash and interior metal trim. The dash was pulled apart, rubbed down along with the metal interior trim.

The primer was sanded with 400# Grit and the specially mixed Blue metallic was applied to the dash.

MrWreckingballs 1962 Ford Galaxie MrWreckingballs 1962 Ford Galaxie

I bought some House Of Kolor Kamen Blue Mini Metalflake to do the steering wheel

and at the suggestion of my brother, used it on the dash. It was sprayed on lightly to give just some very subtle highlights.

MrWreckingballs 1962 Ford Galaxie MrWreckingballs 1962 Ford Galaxie

Started to polish the old Torq Thrusts, with a fair bit of the old elbow grease they are starting to look alright.

MrWreckingballs 1962 Ford Galaxie

It has been a little while since the last post, there has been good progress made. The new headling by a 4 decade veteran trimmer, to the best part of 7 hours. This was one job I had no confidence of tackling and knew that it would probably gone bad if I had done so.

Paul did a stunning job. Also my brother and I install the rear glass along with the new rubber seal.

MrWreckingballs 1962 Ford Galaxie MrWreckingballs 1962 Ford Galaxie

Then it was on to fitting the seal to new windshield, a crack had been discovered in the original just as it was about to be installed. Ralph Moore Autoglass came to our rescue and freighted one down to me and I picked it up from the carrier. However things did not go according to plan, fitting the new seal proved to a proverbial pain as it had been twisted up when it was packed. So the decision was make sure that it would stay in place, lots of tape was used and was left for a couple of hours.

MrWreckingballs 1962 Ford Galaxie

The next job that could be done was to color sand the dash and then rubbed it with compound to give it a nice finish.

MrWreckingballs 1962 Ford Galaxie

MrWreckingballs 1962 Ford Galaxie

The results speak for themselves and then the windscreen was installed along with the painted interior metal trim the frames the windshield.

MrWreckingballs 1962 Ford Galaxie

The next stage to for the final finish on the exterior body surfaces before the stainless trim and other items to be reinstalled.
